SWISS STEAK

This recipe is from a "5 ingredients or less" cookbook by home-ec. teachers. The contributor said "a favorite for men". Well, this is now a favorite for men, women & children in our house! SOOO yummy on a cold winter's night! I am not a big red-meat fan but this was EXCELLENT!

serves 6

1 1/2 pounds round steak
2 tblsp. oil
1 pkg. dry onion soup mix
1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
1 to 1 1/2 cups water
seasonings of your choice (I used a few dashes of marjoram, pepper, & salt)
*you could use seasoned crushed tomatoes instead of reg. and omit extra seasonings.
flour (i added a bit of garlic salt and pepper to the flour)

Cut round steak into 2" by 4" pieces (I cut a bit smaller). Wet each (or don't if you just defrosted & they are already wet) piece with a little water, then dredge in flour. Heat oil in a large, deep skillet. Brown steak in hot oil. Sprinkle soup mix on top, then cover with canned tomatoes & seasonings. Pour 1 cup water over all. Place lid on tightly (foil worked for me) and reduce heat to med-low. Allow to cook on stove in skillet for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, checking from time to time to be sure pan has not become dry. Add extra 1/2 cup water if needed. Serve over mashed potatoes.
